First Draft‘s producer and co-founder Abi Hynes blogs about our upcoming birthday…
First Draft is turning three.
We’ve come a long way since I wrote our very first blog post, and even further since 2012, when my good friend and brilliant writer-performer Sonia Jalaly and I launched our very first event at the Castle Hotel, believing we were trying out a little platform for friends to test out some not-quite-finished-yet work in front of each other.
What we’ve ended up with… Well. I’m never quite sure how to describe it. But – I hope – that some of you know it as a supportive, friendly, rowdy, open-minded sort of cabaret night at which almost anything can happen.
We’ve had everything from songs of praise to fright nights, from intimate evenings with poetry stars to huge one-off events in venues like the John Rylands Library. We’ve been a home to the sublime and the ridiculous – often on the same night.
And, most importantly, we’ve supported new work by storytellers, comedians, theatre-makers, musicians, poets, and a whole lot of artists less easy to categorise. Many of these brilliant people have developed this work further, whether at our Next Draft showcase events, or by taking it on to bigger and better things.
If you’ve ever performed with us, we always want you to keep in touch and tell us what you’re up to, and we’ll share it on this blog whenever we can.
I hope that things will always keep changing at First Draft, and we’ve got some pretty big announcements coming up, which we’ll share with all of you at our 3rd birthday party event, Third Time Lucky, on 15th June. We’ve also got a stellar line up brewing, which we’ll share with you very soon.
In the meantime, if you’ve got memories from the past three years of First Draft, we’d love to hear them!
Thank you to everyone who’s supported us over the last three years. We couldn’t have done it without you.
